DO DHAM AND TUNGNATH YATRA

Why Do Dham and Tungnath Are Must-Do Treks in Uttarakhand?

Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Tungnath — three sacred Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand — are among India’s most important pilgrimage, spiritual, and trekking destinations. The Do Dham Yatra (Kedarnath and Badrinath) and the Tungnath Trek blend devotion, adventure, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

1. Kedarnath: Land of Lord Shiva

  • Location
Kedarnath is at 3,580 meters (11,750 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas, within Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, near the Mandakini River.
Reachable via a 16 km trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter (popular for Kedarnath Yatra).
  • Significance
Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a key stop on the Char Dham Yatra circuit in Uttarakhand.
Renovated by Adi Shankaracharya, the ancient temple is set near the Kedarnath Glacier, offering profound spirituality and awe-inspiring Himalayan views.
  • Climate & Best Time
Harsh winters with heavy snowfall close Kedarnath from October to April. The best time to visit is May to October, especially May-June and during Navratri.

2. Badrinath: The Abode of Lord Vishnu

  • Location
Badrinath sits at 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) along the Alaknanda River in Chamoli district, surrounded by the Nar Narayan mountain range.
  • Significance
Badrinath Temple is a vital Vaishnavite pilgrimage site, dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Badrinarayan. It is part of both the Char Dham and Chota Char Dham circuits.
Believed to have been revived by Adi Shankaracharya; Badrinath is famous for spiritual meditation and beautiful Himalayan landscapes.
  • Climate & Best Time
Extreme winters close Badrinath Temple from October to April. Visit between May and October for the best experience; peak pilgrimage is in May-June.

3. Tungnath: Highest Shiva Temple in the World

  • Location
Tungnath stands at 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, close to the scenic Chopta Meadows (Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand).
  • Significance
World’s highest Shiva temple and part of the Panch Kedar temples, where the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings.
Ideal for spiritual seekers and trekkers; offers panoramic Himalayan views (Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba), perfect for adventure and photography.
  • Climate & Best Time
Sub-alpine conditions; best season is May to November, with lush green meadows after the monsoon (September–October).
